HIGHLIGHTS

  • Lok Sabha elections 2019 are slated to being on April 11.
  • Ahead of the polls, Facebook has been accused of treason.
  • A case has been filed against Facebook for waging war against India.

Ahead of Lok Sabha election in India, Facebook is facing some tough time. A case has been filed against the social media company, accusing it of treason against the Indian state and waging a war against the country after it blocked and suspended hundreds of pages last week. Facebook claims that the pages were blocked or suspended because they were “engaging in behaviours that expressly violate our policies”. Many of these pages were openly aligned with BJP or Congress.

The case has been reportedly filed by Abhijit Iyer-Mitra. When a number of Facebook pages were blocked earlier in the beginning of the month, Mitra, who is a defence analyst, said on Twitter that he was consulting with his lawyers to file a case against Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg for interfering in Indian elections.

Now a case has been reportedly filed at the Sansad Marg police station in Delhi, accusing Facebook of waging war against India. A report on this matter claims that Mitra’s complaint notes Facebook needs to be punished because of its attempts “to interfere in the internal process of elections in India at the behest of foreign powers — including but not limited to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)”. The complaint also mentioned Cambridge Analytica scandal that led to many in the UK and US to allege that Facebook and the data it collected from users was used to influence elections in several countries.

The case against Facebook has been filed under section 121 and section 120B of IPC. The section 121 is specifically used to file cases where there are allegations of a person or organisation waging a war against the Indian state. If found guilty, convicts are “punished with death, or imprisonment for life” under this section. In the complaint filed with the police, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook India MD Ajit Mohan have been mentioned.

On April 8, Facebook announced that it was taking several steps to prepare for the Indian elections. In a note to media the company said, “Last week, we removed nearly 700 Pages, Groups and accounts in India for violating Facebook’s policies on coordinated inauthentic behavior and spam… For a year and a half we’ve been working to bring a comprehensive and strategic approach to our work on the Indian elections. We are absolutely committed to maintaining the integrity of the elections in India and will continue to work with local organizations, government groups and experts to make that happen.”

Apple moved to recapture its role as a dazzling tech trend-setter on Tuesday with its first smartwatch and two large-screen versions of the iPhone.

Apple added in a new mobile wallet that will allow consumers to simply tap their phones to pay retailers.

The Apple Watch, a sleekly designed wrist device which links to the iPhone, “will redefine what people expect from this category,” chief executive Tim Cook said at a launch event in Apple’s hometown Cupertino, California.

“It is the next chapter in Apple’s story.”

New flagship mobile devices

Apple on Tuesday morning launched the much awaited new models of its popular though ageing line of iPhones – the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. The two new phones brought a size boost to the dimunitive phones as it moved closer to the ‘phablet’ end of the size range.

The new 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is only 6.9mm thick, with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus slightly thicker at 7.1mm. Both are thinner than  the last iPhone, the 5S which measured 7.6mm thick.

Apart from the significant reduction in heft and the obvious choice in terms of screen size and the curved corners, the Cupertino company has invested in changes under the hood.

Both new phones are powered by Apple-designed A8 chip, which offers up to 25% faster processing power and up to 50% faster graphics. Apple claims that the iPhone 6 is also up to 50% more energy efficient.

The motion coprocessor, which was introduced in the iPhone 5S model, also gets an upgrade. The new phones have the M8 coprocessor, which continuously measures motion data from the phones accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. In addition, the  iPhone 6 has a barometer that senses air pressure in order to measure relative elevation.

The company claims that the new phone will sport Wi-Fi speeds up to three times faster than last year’s iPhone due to the 802.11ac wireless networking standard.

One of the draws for iPhones has been its camera. The new modesl sport a new 8-megapixel, 2.2-aperture camera which only slightly improves on the iPhone 5S. What it lacks in terms of raw hardware, the company claims it will be making up for in software improvements which will help the user take better pictures. Panoramas, for example, can now be up to 43 megapixels.

While the iPhone 6 features ‘digital’ image stabilisation, the 6 Plus has optical image stabilisation, a plus for all iPhone-graphers. In the burst mode, the iPhone can take up to 10 photos per second.

The new camera can also manage video at 1080p at either 30 or 60 frames per second, while slow-motion video can be shot at either 120 or 240 frames per second.

Needless to say, both new iPhones come with the new iOS 8 operating system.

Cook said the new handsets represented “the biggest advancement in the history of iPhones.”

Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller said the new iPhones were “simply stunning” with polarized glass displays and bodies that are “thinner than ever before.”

“These are the best phones ever made,” Schiller said, as he described the new devices at a major set-piece event streamed live online.

The new iPhone 6 will start at the same price of existing iPhones at $199 for US customers while the iPhone 6 Plus will be at $299 with a two-year contract.

Schiller said the devices would be available in at least 115 countries by the end of the year. Apple will begin taking orders for iPhone 6 models on Friday.

Apple Pay

Cook said the Apple Pay system would replace an “antiquated payment process” with “an entirely new payment system” that allows consumers to touch their phones to retail terminals.

The new payment system will be built into the new iPhones and the upgraded Apple’s operating system called iOS 8.

Cook said that in the United States alone each day, “that’s 200 million times that we scramble through our credit cards and go through what is a fairly antiquated payment process.”

Cook showed a video of a consumer tapping a phone on a payment terminal, commenting, “it’s so cool.”

Apple Watch

The list of goodies does not stop at the two new flagship devices. Apple has finally launched its competitor to Samsung’s Gear smartwatch.

Cook introduced Apple Watch with the “one more thing” introduction that was a trademark of iconic Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

“It is the next chapter in Apple’s story,” Cook said of the first new product category to be entered by the company since the death of Jobs in 2011.

“We invented intimate ways to connect and communicate directly from your wrist; it works seamlessly with iPhone and it is also a comprehensive health and fitness device.”

The watch comes in two sizes and an array of choices of interchangeable, fashionable wrist straps, and will also work with Apple Pay.

Apple watch will start at $349 when it is released early next year, according to Cook. The smartwatch will work with iPhone 5 models and newer.

While Apple Watch has touch-screen capabilities, many controls were designed into a “digital crown” button so fingers do not block screens.

Sensors can detect a wearer’s pulse, and the devices tap into location-sensing features in iPhones to provide a “comprehensive picture of activity” and  help work toward fitness goals, according to Apple senior vice president of design Jonathan Ive.

Applications for the watch include map software that guides people to destinations with gentle “taps” on the wrist.

Apple showed off programs for checking into American Airlines flights, unlocking Starwood hotel room doors, and even controling home lighting or temperature.

“It is amazing what you can do from your wrist,” Cook said.

He touted the potential for Watch activity and pulse tracking capabilities to promote fit lifestyles.

Market tracker IHS saw Apple as aiming to reset the wearable computing market the way it transformed the world of smartphones with the release of the iPhone.

“But moving into a new category is a bold, expensive and risky effort,” IHS said in an initial analysis of the Apple announcements.

Despite an array of smartwatch releases, no one seems to have found the key to the market, according to analyst Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies.

Yahoo reveals attempted hack against email accounts

Yahoo Layoffs

Yahoo has uncovered an attempt to hack into customers’ Yahoo Mail and ordered passwords to be re-set on all affected accounts.

The company said the security attack had been a “coordinated effort to gain unauthorized access to Yahoo Mail accounts” and said it had taken immediate action to make affected users change their passwords.

Yahoo did not give exact information on when the attack took place. It said an investigation showed that “malicious computer software” used a list of usernames and passwords to access Yahoo Mail accounts.

“Based on our current findings, the list of usernames and passwords that were used to execute the attack was likely collected from a third-party database compromise. We have no evidence that they were obtained directly from Yahoo’s systems,” the company said in a statement posted to its Tumblr page.

Yahoo said the attackers attempted to get names and email addresses from victims’ sent emails.

The attack is the latest embarrassment for Yahoo, which was criticized after sending a flurry of tweets about the brief Gmail outage on Friday afternoon. Yahoo later apologized for the tweets, which it said “reflected bad judgment”.

In its statement, Yahoo said it was working with federal law enforcement to “find and prosecute the perpetrators responsible for this attack” and apologized to its users, saying, “We regret this has happened and want to assure our users that we take the security of their data very seriously”.

Earlier this month, a malware attack hit Yahoo’s advertising server, reportedly affecting tens of thousands of users per hour. And in 2012, hackers posted login information for more than 450,000 Yahoo users online.

Apple Reveals iPhone 5S

iPhone_5s

Apple has ended the one-year wait which starts off for next device just as the latest iPhone is announced.

This year, they made an amendment to the usual tradition by announcing two phones instead of one. The iPhone 5S is the top-of-the-line phone as evident by the ‘S’ and brings some incredible changes to the table.

The Display and Design

The design of the iPhone 5S follows the footsteps of the previous iterations and is made of high-grade aluminum with high-chaffered edges. It will be available in three colors: Black-Slate, White-Silver and White-Gold. One major change comes in the home button.

The button has seen its biggest change ever with a built-in 170 micron thick fingerprint scanner in it, called Touch ID. The technology’s use has been maximized in iOS 7 so alongside usual things like unlocking the device, it can also be used for things like iTunes purchasing verifications and other stuff. Multiple users’ fingerprints can also be memorized.

The iPhone 5S is very slick at just 7.6mm thin and 112g heavy. It’s also very environment-friendly, being made of components which are arsenic-free and mercury-free.

The display of the phone was one thing which was almost completely forgotten in Apple’s event. It’s still a 4 inch Retina with 640 x 1136 resolution. In an age of phablets with the Note III being announced only 6 days back, it’s a bit disappointing that Apple hasn’t enhanced the display. That was undoubtedly one of our bigger expectations.

iPhone_5s1

CPU And Other Internals

The iPhone 5S has seen a major overhaul under the surface. The new chip called the A7 is twice as faster as before and 40 times as faster as the 2G. It does 2 times as many general purpose and floating point registers and packs twice as many transistors (1 Billion) as the A6.

The bigger innovation is that it’s the world’s first 64-bit smartphone processor. It will have support for OpenGL ES 3.0 and Xcode. The A7 will also have 64-bit kernels, libraries and drivers. The graphics are twice as fast as well. Overall, the iPhone 5S is 56 times faster than the original iPhone. Half of that spectacular figure is a direct blessing of A7.

The 64-bit chip is still compatible with the 32-bit apps. Also announced was an M7 chip which looks after motion-sensing in real-time and will be great for fitness apps.

The hardcore capabilities of the iPhone 5S were proven in the dazzling demo of Infinity Blade III which is also the last game of this series.

Software

The iPhone 5S comes with iOS 7 pre-installed, of course. That alone brings quite a lot of change including flat icons, better lockscreen, Control Centre, Notification Centre and a male Siri. Apple also announced that all of its essential editing and productivity apps, i.e. Keynote, iMovie, iPhoto, iWork and Pages and Numbers will be free from now onwards. This offer is limited to new iPhones which will be bought in the future only.

As for the rest of the iPhones, the iOS 7 update is coming on 18 September.

Camera

The iPhone 5S’ camera is still of 8 megapixels with a 5-element lens and f2.2 aperture. The sensor area is 15 percent larger. iOS 7 automatically corrects white balance & exposure balance and creates a local dynamic tone map for a better image.

That’s accompanied by a new dual-LED Flash dubbed “True Tone” which consists of a blue and an amber LED and operates on up to 1000 different levels to make photos appear natural. Auto Image Stabilisation and Burst Modes have also seen an entry with the latter being triggered whenever the shutter icon is held. It shoots at a rate of 10 images per second.

As for the video, the 5S captures 1080p video at 30fps, alongside 720p video at 120fps. Slow Motion videos can also be shot. For doing that, 720p videos are shot first while the portions to be slowed-down are chosen afterwards. A combination of the two can also go along, together. Facetime camera has also been improved to perform better in lowlight.

Miscellaneous

The phone’s battery is of 1440 mAh capacity and provides 3G talk-time of 10 hours and 250 hours of standby. Bluetooth 4.0, LTE, Wi-Fi and Lightning Port are used for connectivity. And as usual, a nano-SIM card is used.

Pricing and Availability

The phone will be available in Pakistan for the usual price tag of around $800 or Rs. 85,000 at launch. This price is likely to go down around Rs. 70,000 with-in one month of the launch. Special covers will cost $39 each. The iPhone 5S, alongside the 5C will be put up for sale on the 20th of September. By the end of 2013, it would’ve hit 100 countries.

The iPhone 5S is the high-point for Apple. A lot of future-proofing has been done this time especially on the inside. Had Apple increased the display size to 4.5 inch, the package might’ve become even more tempting but even without it, the 5S is no slouch by any means.

One more thing to note is that unlike others, Apple hasn’t gotten itself into the numbers race. The camera is still 8 megapixels, screen still Retina. Why fix something which isn’t broken? For that, Apple deserves a pat on the back.

As for the phone itself, we’ll let the sales figures decide.

iPhone 5C, a Slightly Cheaper and Redesigned Version of iPhone Gets Unveiled

iPhone_5C

The iPhone 5C was undoubtedly the more anticipated version of the iPhone in today’s event. The cheaper model of the series replaces the iPhone 5 (4S will continue though) and features an all new design which waves goodbye to the usual design language.

Design and Display

The iPhone 5C features the first plastic design in an iPhone for years. While the front is still glass, of course, the back is a single piece of hard-coated polycarbonate plastic, made stronger by a reinforced steel structure. iPhone 5C will be available in White, Yellow, Green, Red and Blue.

The Retina display measures 4 inches diagonally, the same as the iPhone 5 and 5S, having resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels. The 5C is also made of compounds which are Arsenic-free, Mercury-free and “Android-free”.

Hardware

The iPhone 5C is powered by an Apple A6 processor, the same breed in the line of processors which ran on the iPhone 5.

Software

The phone will come with iOS 7 pre-installed which will definitely match the colorful identity of the device it’s running on.

Apple claimed that iPhone 5C will be vivid realization of hardware and software together in one device.

Apple’s own productivity-boosting software, i.e. iWork, iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote and Pages and Numbers will also be free for this device.

Camera

The camera on the iPhone 5C is also an 8 megapixel BSI sensor with 5-element lens. It does 1080p Full HD videos at 30fps too. The front-facing camera is also improved to perform better in low-lighting conditions.

Miscellaneous

The battery of the iPhone 5C is not-disclosed right now but can last 10 hours during 3G talk-time and 250 hours on standby. Bluetooth 4.0, Lightning Port, dual-band Wi-Fi, LTE and headset jack is used for connectivity.

Pricing and Availability

The price of the iPhone 5C is set at $99 and $199 on contract for 16 and 32 GB versions. At launch, it will cost around 70,000 PKR in Pakistan but that figure will settle down later. Optional cases will cost $29.

As you might’ve noticed, the iPhone 5C is a lot like the phone it’s replacing. It does bring a new design however and maybe that will be one of its key selling factors. Being an Apple product, it is priced highly and of course, you can buy a 4S or a used 5 for much cheaper but for those who are buying an iPhone and planning to keep it longer, the 5C is probably your safer bet.

Smartphone Makers Pushed to Add Kill Switch for Stolen Phones

Smartphone-Theft_thumbSmartphone makers are pushed by American officials to come up with a mechanism which will ideally make smartphones useless and just a piece of plastic if it is stolen.

Move is aimed at discouraging the smartphone theft and making it almost useless to steal a smartphone.

Officials driving the campaign have met Samsung, Apple and Microsoft – who account for 90 percent of smartphone market share – to convince them for adding a kill switch in smartphones, trigging which should disable the smartphone for any use in any case.

Ideally, if kill switch is activated, the smartphone will become a paperweight with not performing any functionality in any case. The mechanism on how this kill switch should get activated is still being argued and is likely to meet a consensus after deliberation.

If such a mechanism is worked out and put in practice, this will help Asian and especially South Asian markets to a greater extent. Since these regions are heavily burdened with phone theft cases and especially when smartphones are too expensive compared with usual commodities, such a kill switch can add further value for the consumers.

Apple Announces New Macbook Air and Mac Pro for 2013

Apple must’ve been very busy at their famed WWDC event of this year again. And for good reasons, among the important announcements done by Apple was that of the new Mac laptops and systems for this year.

Apple has updated the MacBook Air with the new Haswell CPUs and improved battery life. The Mac Pro desktop system has been updated with a considerably trimmed down design for the first the first time in its life cycle.

MacBook Air

macbook-air

The new MacBook air features the same design as its predecessors. As said earlier, it comes with the new 4th generation Intel “Haswell” chips which promise up to 40% faster graphics and power efficiency. They’ll be available in i5 & i7 flavors with 4 GB RAM and Intel HD 5000 graphics.

They also come with the new 802.11ac Wifi which is said to be 3 times faster than normal ones. USB 3.0, Thunderbolt port, Facetime HD camera and dual-microphones are included as well.

Battery life is improved too. The smaller, 11 inch model sees its battery life improve to 9 hours and the larger 13 inch one, to 12 hours. The standby time is also over 30 days now. They also wake up faster from standby mode, in 1 second.

The two models will be available in 128 and 256 GB SSD storage options which will be 45% faster too. The two models of the 11 inch laptop will be available for $999 and $1199 respectively while those of the larger model will be available for $1099 and $1299 respectively. The new MacBook Air will start shipping today.

Mac Pro

Mac-Pro-_

This is the first redesign that the Mac Pro has seen in its lifecycle. The new Mac Pro comes in a new cylindrical design which, according to Apple, is just 1/8th the size of its predecessor. It will now come with an AMD GPU and Intel XEON processors.

The Mac Pro also features 6 Thunderbolt 2 ports and 4 USB 3.0 ports (both of whom have been missing until now), along with HDMI out, Gigabit Ethernet and Motion Sensor. It will be available this fall but its price is still kept in the dark. I for one have some doubts though, that Apple might’ve just redesigned the Mac Pro just like the failed Power Mac Cube again but we’ll see.

NSA Prism Program Taps in to User Data of Apple, Google and Others

Prism

The National Security Agency has obtained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other US internet giants, according to a top secret document obtained by the Guardian.

The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called Prism, which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says.

The Guardian has verified the authenticity of the document, a 41-slide PowerPoint presentation – classified as top secret with no distribution to foreign allies – which was apparently used to train intelligence operatives on the capabilities of the program. The document claims “collection directly from the servers” of major US service providers.

Although the presentation claims the program is run with the assistance of the companies, all those who responded to a Guardian request for comment on Thursday denied knowledge of any such program.

In a statement, Google said: “Google cares deeply about the security of our users’ data. We disclose user data to government in accordance with the law, and we review all such requests carefully. From time to time, people allege that we have created a government ‘back door’ into our systems, but Google does not have a back door for the government to access private user data.”

Several senior tech executives insisted that they had no knowledge of Prism or of any similar scheme. They said they would never have been involved in such a program. “If they are doing this, they are doing it without our knowledge,” one said.

An Apple spokesman said it had “never heard” of Prism.

The NSA access was enabled by changes to US surveillance law introduced under President Bush and renewed under Obama in December 2012.

PrismThe program facilitates extensive, in-depth surveillance on live communications and stored information. The law allows for the targeting of any customers of participating firms who live outside the US, or those Americans whose communications include people outside the US.

It also opens the possibility of communications made entirely within the US being collected without warrants.

Disclosure of the Prism program follows a leak to the Guardian on Wednesday of a top-secret court order compelling telecoms provider Verizon to turn over the telephone records of millions of US customers.

The participation of the internet companies in Prism will add to the debate, ignited by the Verizon revelation, about the scale of surveillance by the intelligence services. Unlike the collection of those call records; this surveillance can include the content of communications and not just the metadata.

Some of the world’s largest internet brands are claimed to be part of the information-sharing program since its introduction in 2007. Microsoft – which is currently running an advertising campaign with the slogan “Your privacy is our priority” – was the first, with collection beginning in December 2007.

It was followed by Yahoo in 2008; Google, Facebook and PalTalk in 2009; YouTube in 2010; Skype and AOL in 2011; and finally Apple, which joined the program in 2012. The program is continuing to expand, with other providers due to come online.

Collectively, the companies cover the vast majority of online email, search, video and communications networks.

Prism

The extent and nature of the data collected from each company varies.

Companies are legally obliged to comply with requests for users’ communications under US law, but the Prism program allows the intelligence services direct access to the companies’ servers. The NSA document notes the operations have “assistance of communications providers in the US”.

The revelation also supports concerns raised by several US senators during the renewal of the Fisa Amendments Act in December 2012, who warned about the scale of surveillance the law might enable, and shortcomings in the safeguards it introduces.

When the FAA was first enacted, defenders of the statute argued that a significant check on abuse would be the NSA’s inability to obtain electronic communications without the consent of the telecom and internet companies that control the data. But the Prism program renders that consent unnecessary; as it allows the agency to directly and unilaterally seize the communications off the companies’ servers.

A chart prepared by the NSA, contained within the top-secret document obtained by the Guardian, underscores the breadth of the data it is able to obtain: email, video and voice chat, videos, photos, voice-over-IP (Skype, for example) chats, file transfers, social networking details, and more.

PRISM slide crop

The document is recent, dating to April 2013. Such a leak is extremely rare in the history of the NSA, which prides itself on maintaining a high level of secrecy.

The Prism program allows the NSA, the world’s largest surveillance organisation, to obtain targeted communications without having to request them from the service providers and without having to obtain individual court orders.

With this program, the NSA is able to reach directly into the servers of the participating companies and obtain both stored communications as well as perform real-time collection on targeted users.

The presentation claims Prism was introduced to overcome what the NSA regarded as shortcomings of Fisa warrants in tracking suspected foreign terrorists. It noted that the US has a “home-field advantage” due to housing much of the internet’s architecture. But the presentation claimed “Fisa constraints restricted our home-field advantage” because Fisa required individual warrants and confirmations that both the sender and receiver of a communication were outside the US.

“Fisa was broken because it provided privacy protections to people who were not entitled to them,” the presentation claimed. “It took a Fisa court order to collect on foreigners overseas who were communicating with other foreigners overseas simply because the government was collecting off a wire in the United States. There were too many email accounts to be practical to seek Fisas for all.”

The new measures introduced in the FAA redefines “electronic surveillance” to exclude anyone “reasonably believed” to be outside the USA – a technical change which reduces the bar to initiating surveillance.

The act also gives the director of national intelligence and the attorney general power to permit obtaining intelligence information, and indemnifies internet companies against any actions arising as a result of co-operating with authorities’ requests.

In short, where previously the NSA needed individual authorisations, and confirmation that all parties were outside the USA, they now need only reasonable suspicion that one of the parties was outside the country at the time of the records were collected by the NSA.

The document also shows the FBI acts as an intermediary between other agencies and the tech companies, and stresses its reliance on the participation of US internet firms, claiming “access is 100% dependent on ISP provisioning”.

In the document, the NSA hails the Prism program as “one of the most valuable, unique and productive accesses for NSA”.

It boasts of what it calls “strong growth” in its use of the Prism program to obtain communications. The document highlights the number of obtained communications increased in 2012 by 248% for Skype – leading the notes to remark there was “exponential growth in Skype reporting; looks like the word is getting out about our capability against Skype”. There was also a 131% increase in requests for Facebook data, and 63% for Google.

The NSA document indicates that it is planning to add Dropbox as a PRISM provider. The agency also seeks, in its words, to “expand collection services from existing providers”.

The revelations echo fears raised on the Senate floor last year during the expedited debate on the renewal of the FAA powers which underpin the PRISM program, which occurred just days before the act expired.

Senator Christopher Coons of Delaware specifically warned that the secrecy surrounding the various surveillance programs meant there was no way to know if safeguards within the act were working.

“The problem is: we here in the Senate and the citizens we represent don’t know how well any of these safeguards actually work,” he said.

“The law doesn’t forbid purely domestic information from being collected. We know that at least one Fisa court has ruled that the surveillance program violated the law. Why? Those who know can’t say and average Americans can’t know.”

Other senators also raised concerns. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon attempted, without success, to find out any information on how many phone calls or emails had been intercepted under the program.

When the law was enacted, defenders of the FAA argued that a significant check on abuse would be the NSA’s inability to obtain electronic communications without the consent of the telecom and internet companies that control the data. But the Prism program renders that consent unnecessary; as it allows the agency to directly and unilaterally seize the communications off the companies’ servers.

When the NSA reviews a communication it believes merits further investigation, it issues what it calls a “report”. According to the NSA, “over 2,000 Prism-based reports” are now issued every month. There were 24,005 in 2012, a 27% increase on the previous year.

In total, more than 77,000 intelligence reports have cited the PRISM program.

Jameel Jaffer, director of the ACLU’s Center for Democracy that it was astonishing the NSA would even ask technology companies to grant direct access to user data.

“It’s shocking enough just that the NSA is asking companies to do this,” he said. “The NSA is part of the military. The military has been granted unprecedented access to civilian communications.

“This is unprecedented militarization of domestic communications infrastructure. That’s profoundly troubling to anyone who is concerned about that separation.”

A senior administration official said in a statement: “The Guardian and Washington Post articles refer to collection of communications pursuant to Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. This law does not allow the targeting of any US citizen or of any person located within the United States.

“The program is subject to oversight by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the Executive Branch, and Congress. It involves extensive procedures, specifically approved by the court, to ensure that only non-US persons outside the US are targeted, and that minimize the acquisition, retention and dissemination of incidentally acquired information about US persons.

“This program was recently reauthorized by Congress after extensive hearings and debate.

“Information collected under this program is among the most important and valuable intelligence information we collect, and is used to protect our nation from a wide variety of threats.

“The Government may only use Section 702 to acquire foreign intelligence information, which is specifically, and narrowly, defined in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. This requirement applies across the board, regardless of the nationality of the target.”

7 Best Launcher Apps Available for Android Devices

Are you getting bored with the stock look of your android phone? Why not go ahead and change the launcher and get a better UI matching your taste.

If you still not sure that what we are talking about then launchers are apps that change the home UI of your Android devices. They allow you to change icons, animations, App drawer settings, add more home screens, hide apps, allows wallpaper sliding while viewing different home screens, 3D effects, transition effects, themes etc.

Below we’re going to list some of the  best launchers or home replacements available in Google Play.

Nova Launcher

Nova launcher is by far the best launcher or home replacement we’ve used so far. It’s very stable and simple.

But there are few cons, it doesn’t have variety of features as we’ve seen in other competitors. There is limited amount of transition effect in it, but it’s stability and performance leaves every other launcher behind.

Nova launcher is quite similar to the stock launcher of ICS, But it’s a great change if you are coming from Touchwiz, HTC sense etc. Nova launcher brings many themes that can be found in Google Play.

Nova launcher has paid version and free versions. Paid version costs $4.00 that adds some premium features.

GO Launcher EX stands at a great place of respect in Google Play, that’s probably because of the large number of themes widgets and some side apps that can customize the device even more. It has tons of features that’ll surprise you when you go through its settings.

The theme collection is huge and most of them are free but some are paid. When you download the launcher it comes with a market, From there you can download add-ons, widgets, go locker, themes etc.

But this launcher doesn’t offer that much of stability nor the performance. We experienced that device gets really laggy and slow if you’re using a mid end or low end android phone. Having said this, we don’t mean that launcher is bad, in fact you won’t notice that lag and slow performance in high end android phones.

GO Launcher EX is free in Google Play.

Vire is pretty fancy looking launcher. It comes with this very catchy 3D effect. If you tilt the device you can notice the glass reflection on vire widgets and other animation while using the launcher.

The launcher runs quite smooth and performance is good as well. The features in the setting menu are limited but we appreciate how simple and glassy interface it has. The app drawer seemed a little blurry even though the transition effect was pleasing but vire launcher needs more improvement to stand in the competition.

Even the smallest things are kept in mind and shows something different, something unique than others. The only con is that it comes with is its ridiculously expensive price tag of $15.99.

Splay launcher is very gorgeous looking piece of the art. The launcher has categories and sub categories from where you can open apps.

It’s hard to get used to it and sometimes things don’t work that well. But this launcher is unique, It doesn’t make your device look like an android. The graphics are great but they need little polishing. it’s snappy and very stable.

You can’t use widgets on this launcher as well, but instead of using widgets you can have shortcuts.

If you’re a fan of the UI of windows phone 8 and you want to have those animated live tiles that smoothness that looks and feel than Launcher 8 is for you.

It’s not exactly the same thing as windows phone 8 but It feels quite similar. you can install different themes on it and make it much more customizable.

This launcher also comes with windows phone lock screen where you have to swipe up to unlock. Launcher 8 is very snappy and is stable as well but while using this launcher we noticed significant battery loss, it tends to eat more battery.
